BMW X4 M40i

X4 M40i is the current petrol M Performance alternative to the live xDrive20d diesel.

X4 M40i is the performance-oriented petrol identity on BMW South Africa’s live X4 grid. It sits beside xDrive20d rather than a reconstructed historical package ladder, and the current range does not expose an X4 M Competition row. The derivative uses an eight-speed automatic in the current South African lineup. Because the July 2026 consolidated price list omits X4, the buyer should obtain the latest engine, output, price and equipment details in writing for the exact vehicle rather than carrying numbers forward from an earlier edition. M40i’s purpose is nevertheless clear. It serves the driver who wants the coupé-SUV body and a stronger petrol performance character than xDrive20d’s distance brief. That choice implies a larger continuing budget for fuel, tyres and insurance. A customer drawn mainly to styling should determine whether the diesel meets every practical need before paying for performance that traffic rarely permits. The body’s tapered roof remains unchanged by the more powerful badge. Rear head space, child-seat access and cargo height need the same real-world test. Place luggage, sports equipment or a dog enclosure inside the rear compartment and close the tailgate. Loose items must be restrained, particularly in a vehicle selected for rapid acceleration. Performance ownership starts with tyres. Record the fitted size, obtain replacement prices and check availability on common routes. Drive broken surfaces with rear passengers and listen for impact harshness. An attractive large wheel can undermine the daily value of a premium SUV if every pothole creates worry. Insurance must use the complete M40i identity. Power should be introduced progressively on wet or cold roads. Any all-wheel-drive system or stability aid can work only through the available tyre contact. The driver remains responsible for legal speed, following distance and an escape margin. Someone moving from a much less powerful vehicle should allow a careful familiarisation period and consider advanced instruction. Urban use requires patience with the X4’s rearward visibility. Rehearse the home garage, office ramp and parallel space. Parking aids provide useful perspectives without changing the body’s corners. The automatic simplifies queues; the performance engine’s potential does not make stop-start travel more productive. On national roads, M40i should have ample passing response. The correct test focuses on seat support, tyre noise, steering calm and fuel range at legal speed rather than a brief acceleration demonstration. A full luggage load affects mass and visibility. Roof equipment adds drag and raises the vehicle’s total height. An SUV outline does not make M40i a technical off-roader. Maintained gravel may be crossed cautiously, but performance-oriented wheels and tyres are vulnerable to stones and severe corrugation. Deep mud, sand or washed tracks call for different hardware. xDrive20d is not automatically more rugged either; route condition should govern both. Build specification is crucial. Seats, roof, cameras, assistance systems, audio and exterior items can differ across in-stock cars. BMW’s live identity confirms the model, not every installed feature. Obtain a signed list and Motorplan details before payment. M40i is the right current X4 only when its petrol performance is an explicit priority. If the owner accepts its costs, proves the rear shape and documents the current car accurately, it delivers a distinctive road-focused alternative. If not, xDrive20d or the more upright X3 deserves attention.

Where the BMW X4 Fits Best

A practical view of the buyer and roads this model is best suited to.

Who buys this

M40i suits an experienced buyer who values petrol performance and X4 styling enough to accept higher fuel, tyre and insurance costs. The owner must verify the current vehicle and use the extra response responsibly. A mileage-led customer or someone interested mainly in the body shape should compare xDrive20d before choosing the performance badge.

City
The automatic manages congestion, while strong petrol response requires restraint on wet streets. Use the city drive to assess rear visibility, wheel exposure and passenger comfort rather than searching for acceleration. Test the garage and tight ramps, record the exact tyre and investigate replacement supply. A short urban routine can be expensive in fuel, so the annual budget should not rely on an old brochure figure or another BMW engine.
Highway
M40i’s appeal should be evident in controlled response, easy joining and confident planned overtaking. Stay within legal limits and use a sustained test to assess seats, road noise and fuel range. Secure luggage beneath the sloping tailgate. Tyre condition matters in rain regardless of drivetrain sophistication. Ask the retailer for the current engine and consumption statement attached to the offered vehicle.
Off-Road
Good gravel is the practical limit for most owners. Reduce speed, avoid stone edges and inspect for storm damage. Performance wheels and body components are not protected for technical tracks, while powerful throttle inputs can reduce grip on loose surfaces. Buyers who need recurring rural access should select a utility-focused SUV rather than hoping the M badge adds ruggedness.

BMW X4 M40i: buyer assessment
Hagalu editorial review by Hagalu Editorial Team · 2026-09-28

Request a current written specification for the exact M40i, including output, drivetrain, transmission, price, wheels, equipment and delivery status. Drive that vehicle on representative city and highway roads with the normal passengers. Load the cargo area, inspect rear head room and check the garage with the tailgate raised. Obtain tyre and insurance quotes before optional appearance choices consume attention. Compare the same tasks in xDrive20d and X3. Performance should earn its cost through the driver’s legal-speed experience, not through a headline remembered from an older model year. Review Motorplan and stock provenance as part of the transaction. If the body works and the buyer wants the stronger petrol character consciously, M40i has a defensible niche; otherwise the diesel or a more practical BMW will be easier to own. How this score is calculated · Methodology v1.0

The live X4 performance choice, but only for buyers who document the current car and want its extra pace.

X4 M40i provides a clear counterpoint to the xDrive20d: petrol performance instead of diesel-distance logic. It should be evaluated as a road-focused M Performance SUV, not as a surviving X4 M Competition. Current written technical and price details are essential because the consolidated July list is silent. Once that evidence, rear-space fit and operating budget are secure, M40i can be an appealing specialist daily vehicle.
