Sort the big pile

The market has four main boxes

A school has learners, teachers, buses and delivery vans. The vehicle market also sorts different jobs into separate boxes. Passenger cars were the biggest box in 2025.

Official sector2025 unitsChange from 2024Share of total
Passenger cars422292+20.1%70.8%

Heavy trucks and buses22738-3.0%3.8%

Light commercial does not mean “bakkies only”. It is a wider industry category that can include bakkies, vans and other light work vehicles. That is why Hagalu does not turn the sector total into a made-up bakkie ranking.

Why did the number rise?

Several small pushes moved the market together

NAAMSA linked the recovery to interest-rate relief, very low vehicle-price inflation, improved credit conditions, delayed replacement demand and a wider supply of affordable imported cars.

1

Borrowing pressure eased

Rate relief can reduce repayment pressure, although every buyer still receives a personal finance quote.

2

Prices moved more slowly

Low vehicle inflation made list-price changes less severe than buyers had become used to.

3

Old cars needed replacing

Some households and businesses had delayed purchases and returned when conditions improved.

4

More lower-priced choices arrived

A larger range of affordable imports gave buyers more ways to enter the new-car market.

A change inside the market

Cars are starting to use more than one kind of energy

A petrol or diesel car stores energy in a fuel tank. A battery-electric car stores it in a large battery. Hybrids combine an engine with electrical help in different ways.

The annual release says new-energy vehicle sales by November 2025 had already passed the total for all of 2024. It does not give a complete model-by-model annual ranking in the same table, so this guide does not invent one.

Hybrid

An engine plus an electric motor. The size and job of the electrical helper vary.

Plug-in hybrid

An engine, motor and battery that can also be charged from a plug.

Battery electric

Electric motors only; the large drive battery is charged from a plug.

Turn market news into a smart decision

Four useful lessons for a buyer

1

Set the whole monthly budget

Add the instalment, insurance, fuel, service items, tyres and parking—not only the advertised payment.

2

Compare current choices

More competition can help, but only a written quote shows the real price of your exact derivative.

3

Test the car's real job

Bring child seats, measure the boot and drive on roads like the ones you use every week.

4

Keep money for surprises

A car that uses every last rand is not affordable when tyres, excess payments or repairs arrive.

What this report can—and cannot—tell you

It can tell us…

  • The official total for the whole year.
  • How the four industry sectors changed.
  • The official annual export total.
  • The broad conditions NAAMSA linked to growth.

It cannot tell us…

  • Which car is best for your family.
  • Your personal loan rate or insurance premium.
  • A complete annual model ranking that is absent from the cited release.
  • That every registration equals one private person buying one car.
Did passenger cars make up the whole 596,818?

No. Passenger cars recorded 422,292; the total also includes commercial sectors.

Can one December table prove the full-year model winner?

No. A monthly table and a complete annual ranking are different datasets.

Does market growth mean I should rush?

No. Buy when the car and full cost fit your real needs.

Straight answers

Questions people actually ask

How much did the South African new-vehicle market grow in 2025?

How many light commercial vehicles were sold in 2025?

The official light-commercial sector recorded 143,637 sales, up 7.8% from 133,250 in 2024. This sector includes bakkies and other light commercials, so it should not be described as a bakkie-only number.

What was South Africa's best-selling model in 2025?

How many vehicles did South Africa export in 2025?

Vehicle exports reached 408,224 units, up 4.4% from 2024 and above 400,000 for the first time, according to the official annual release.
