GWM ORA 5

ORA 5 is a South African SUV with a suv body and petrol / hybrid / electric power.

GWM launched one body with three different powertrain strategies: a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, a 1.5T hybrid with a dedicated hybrid transmission, and a battery-electric version. Each powertrain is offered in Super Luxury and Ultra Luxury trim, producing a six-derivative range from R364,900 to R599,900. It is the price-led route into the range at R364,900 for Super Luxury and R409,900 for Ultra Luxury. The hybrid raises the published system figures to 164 kW and 476 Nm, with prices of R424,900 and R474,900. The BEV uses a 150 kW, 260 Nm electric motor and a 58.33 kWh battery. GWM quotes a 520 km NEDC pure-electric range for both BEV grades and prices them at R549,900 and R599,900. NEDC is a laboratory cycle, not a promise of South African motorway range, so buyers should not use 520 km as a guaranteed Joburg-to-Durban planning figure. The July brochure does not publish an AC charge time, DC peak rate or a local real-world range. It includes LED headlamps and tail lamps, daytime running lamps, roof rails, automatic front wipers, a rear wiper, synthetic leather upholstery, a six-way electrically adjustable driver's seat, automatic air conditioning with rear outlets, a 10.25-inch digital cluster, a 14.6-inch touchscreen, voice control, six speakers, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, three USB connections, keyless entry, reverse parking sensors and a 360-degree panoramic camera. Six airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, ABS, electronic brake-force distribution, hill-hold control, tyre-pressure monitoring and ISOFIX are common across the range. That equipment makes the base grade a credible car, not merely a low advertised price. It replaces the manual tailgate with an electric one, adds a panoramic glass roof, a 50 W wireless phone charger, electric adjustment for the front passenger seat, heated and ventilated front seats, driver's-seat memory and welcome function, electric folding and heated mirrors, four-door one-touch windows, rhythmic multi-colour ambient lighting and intelligent high/low-beam switching. The ORA 5 has a clearer South African buying case when its suv shape is connected to the work it must do. The useful starting points are a South African price reference of R364,900 and engine of 1.5-litre Turbocharged Petrol; together they explain more than a badge or a screen size

Driving fit

Where the GWM ORA 5 Fits Best

A practical view of the buyer and roads this model is best suited to.

Who buys this

A buyer can choose the shape and cabin first, then decide whether conventional refuelling, hybrid assistance or fully electric driving fits the household. The best buyer for ORA 5 can describe a recurring reason for choosing its suv layout. Then compare a South African price reference of R364,900 and engine of 1.5-litre Turbocharged Petrol with insurance, tyres, maintenance and the monthly finance payment

City
The urban test for ORA 5 should resemble the owner’s route: a cold start, queues, kerbs, a narrow turn and a place where people or goods must be loaded. City use is where the small decisions accumulate for ORA 5. Drive the ORA 5 through the tightest parking area, a steep ramp, a speed hump and stop-start traffic. Pay attention to the steering, sight lines, low-speed response, seat position and climate control rather than relying on a quiet dealership loop for ORA 5. Warranty of 7 years / 200,000 km matters when the cabin or load is full, and a South African price reference of R409,900 can change the cost of repeated short trips for ORA 5
Highway
The GWM ORA 5 arrived in South African showrooms in July 2026 as a much broader proposition than its pre-launch coverage suggested. For highway buyers, the ORA 5 needs to make sense when passengers, luggage or work equipment are aboard. Petrol power helps frame the vehicle’s intended workload; do not assume that a larger body automatically brings more reserve or comfort
Off-Road
The 60-profile tyres offer more sidewall than the fashion- driven low-profile fitments on some compact SUVs, while the multi-link rear layout should help isolate broken suburban surfaces. A 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission may help, but neither a tall bonnet nor petrol / hybrid / electric alone creates four-wheel drive, low range or a published wading ability

GWM ORA 5 — Should You Buy It?

4.3/5
Three powertrains make the ORA 5 unusually flexible

The ORA 5's strongest argument is choice. South Africans can buy the same compact crossover with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, a stronger hybrid system or a battery-electric powertrain, then choose Super Luxury or Ultra Luxury trim. Even Super Luxury includes synthetic-leather upholstery, large displays, a 360-degree camera and six airbags, while the 2,720 mm wheelbase provides useful passenger space. The range still needs careful reading. The full driver-assistance package is concentrated in Ultra Luxury, so the entry grade should not be scored as though it has every collision-avoidance feature. GWM quotes a 520 km NEDC range for the 58.33 kWh EV, but that laboratory figure is not a guarantee of South African motorway range. The launch material also leaves charging speed, luggage capacity and towing data unresolved. The seven-year/200,000 km vehicle warranty and seven-year/75,000 km service plan strengthen the ownership case, while the hybrid and EV receive additional high-voltage battery cover. Resale, software support and long-term experience remain less certain because this is a newly launched model. Overall, the ORA 5 is versatile and keenly priced when buyers choose the right energy strategy first and equipment grade second.

How this score is calculated · Methodology v1.0

ORA 5 deserves a closer look when its price, equipment and powertrain fit the owner’s route.

That extra spend buys the same broad equipment package in each powertrain, so buyers can assess it independently of engine choice. A fair review of ORA 5 should end with the owner’s route, not a universal verdict. The combination of a power output of 105 kW, a 7-Speed DCT transmission and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission can be valuable for the right driver. The buying case for ORA 5 is specific. A 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission gives it a reason to be considered, while Petrol power and a listed ground clearance of 175 set the boundaries for ORA 5. It deserves a shortlist when those details solve a repeated South African driving need for ORA 5. It is less persuasive when the buyer is paying for unused capacity or assuming that another derivative’s equipment applies here for ORA 5. Compare the written price, the nearest grade and one genuine alternative before deciding for ORA 5
