BYD DOLPHIN SURF

The BYD DOLPHIN SURF is BYD's smallest current South African electric car and one of the range's most accessible entry points. Comfort EV costs R341,900 and combines a 30.08 kWh Blade Battery with a 55 kW front motor and 135 Nm. Dynamic EV costs R395,900, retaining the 55 kW and 135 Nm output while enlarging the battery to 38.88 kWh. Official WLTP range rises from 232 km to 295 km, and published DC charging capability rises from 30 kW to 40 kW. The derivative choice is therefore about range, charging margin and equipment rather than acceleration. Comfort is officially listed at 14.2 seconds from 0-100 km/h, while Dynamic is listed at 15.5 seconds despite its larger battery. These figures show that the car is tuned for economical city mobility, not fast performance. At 3,925 mm long, 1,720 mm wide and 1,590 mm high on a 2,500 mm wheelbase, the SURF is easy to place in congested streets and tight parking. It still provides five seats, although five adults should try the cabin before assuming comfortable long-distance use. Published ground clearance is 155 mm unladen and 120 mm with a full seating load, so steep ramps, potholes and rough shoulders still require care. The 230-litre boot, hatchback opening and folding rear seating support shopping and smaller-family loads, but buyers should bring the actual stroller, wheelchair or work cases they need to carry. A compact body works only when the cargo fits. Both derivatives include a 10.1-inch central screen in the local specification. Dynamic adds equipment including a wireless phone charger, electrically adjustable driver seat, side airbags and telescopic steering adjustment. Those are meaningful daily upgrades, particularly the added restraint equipment and a steering position that may suit more drivers. Comfort's lower price remains its central strength. A buyer should compare the current line-by-line safety and comfort list instead of treating Dynamic as simply the longer-range car. The 55 kW motor is suitable for urban speeds and ordinary suburban hills, but overtaking on a high-speed road needs planning. Electric range must be interpreted conservatively. A 232 km or 295 km WLTP result does not promise the same distance at 120 km/h with air-conditioning, passengers and headwind. Small batteries are efficient to carry and cheaper to purchase, yet they leave less absolute buffer when conditions deteriorate. Home charging is the key enabler. Even modest AC equipment can restore a small battery overnight, subject to the property supply and official cable requirements. Public charging is useful for occasional extension, although 30 or 40 kW peak DC input is slower than larger premium EVs and actual sessions follow a curve. The SURF is best understood as an urban EV that can make carefully planned regional trips. Comfort is the price-led recommendation for short, predictable routines. Dynamic is more complete through its 295 km claim, 40 kW DC input and extra equipment. Neither should be expected to match a larger EV's highway performance, range buffer or charging peak. Used in the environment for which it was designed, the car offers quiet, low-energy mobility at a compelling price. BYD South Africa's published warranty table lists three-year or 100,000 km complete-vehicle cover, eight-year or 200,000 km power-battery cover and five-year or 100,000 km drive-unit cover for the DOLPHIN SURF. BYD South Africa separately publishes roadside-assistance coverage for five years or 100,000 km, whichever comes first. BYD's model-specific South African booklet includes a four-year/two-service service plan and explicitly states that no maintenance plan is included; buyers should follow its schedule and exclusions.
