Geely E5 Electric vs E5 EM-i: Two Different Choices
The shared E5 name makes these SUVs sound closer than they are. One asks you to plan around electricity; the other asks you to make a habit of using it.
Start with Monday night, not the holiday brochure
Where will the car sit after a normal day's driving, and can it charge there? That one answer does more to distinguish these E5s than their shared family name. An electric car with dependable overnight charging can begin each day replenished without a special refuelling trip. A plug-in hybrid can do the same within its smaller battery's useful range, while retaining the engine for journeys that go further.
If overnight charging is unavailable, neither car should be judged using a convenient-home-charging assumption. Map the alternative you can actually use. Check whether workplace charging is available to you, whether a public site is accessible at the right time, and how the tariff changes the running cost.
The EM-i's petrol flexibility does not make regular charging pointless. It is what lets an owner use the larger plug-in battery for routine electric travel rather than carry that capability unused. Our separate no-home-charging guide examines where that compromise can work.
Do not compare a combined range with an electric range
| Question | E5 Electric | E5 EM-i |
|---|---|---|
| Energy sources | External electricity | External electricity and petrol |
| Electric-only range | Aspire 430 km; Apex 410 km; Apex Plus 450 km | Aspire and Apex: 105 km |
| Published battery capacity | 60.22 kWh; 68.39 kWh for Apex Plus | 18.4 kWh |
| Published standard boot | 461 litres | 528 litres |
| Overall length | 4,615 mm | 4,740 mm |
Model-specific sources: Geely SA E5 Electric and E5 EM-i. The Electric derivative ranges are presented as WLTP claims in the local contract; do not substitute one trim's range for another's.
The EM-i's 943-km derivative combined-range figure includes the petrol side of the vehicle. It is not 943 km on the battery. Geely's webpage also has a 1,002-km model-level headline that has not been reconciled with the derivative figure. Neither is a sensible guaranteed distance between stops for your trip plan.
The cargo difference is useful, but still try the stroller, equipment cases or travel bags you use. A larger quoted volume does not necessarily mean a particular awkward object fits more easily. Do not transfer E5 Electric's folded maximum to the EM-i, and do not assume identical dimensions because both use E5 branding.
Plan your longest regular journey, not your longest imagined one
A rare cross-country holiday can dominate the conversation even when most kilometres are predictable local trips. Write down how often the difficult journey actually happens. For the Electric, inspect dependable charging stops, a backup site and the usable distance between them with a reserve. Include the passengers' stopping routine, not just the advertised charging peak.
For the EM-i, the petrol engine reduces dependence on public charging for longer travel. That can be valuable if routes change at short notice. It does not remove ordinary fuel planning, nor prove a particular fuel consumption after the battery's externally charged portion is used.
A fair running-cost comparison needs a full period of use. Count the Electric's wall energy, and both petrol and wall energy for the EM-i. Do not compare the Electric's electricity bill with only the PHEV's petrol receipts; that would omit one of the PHEV's energy purchases.
The cheaper purchase and the cheaper journey need not be the same car

Use comparable equipment when comparing quotations. A higher trim's roof, seats or cameras should not silently become the assumed cost of choosing a powertrain. Likewise, a promotional wallbox needs its own terms: check whether installation, electrical upgrades and the required cable route are included.
Ownership cover needs separate attention. The two models do not have interchangeable service-plan schedules. Ask for the current contract attached to each order, including battery terms, service intervals and the provider responsible for a claim. Also demonstrate phone projection on each vehicle; one E5's connectivity confirmation is not evidence for the other.
Two buyers, two defensible answers
The predictable commuter
Dependable charging, manageable regular distances and planned long trips make E5 Electric a serious candidate. Check energy cost and purchase premium over the intended ownership period.
The frequently changing itinerary
Regular charging plus less predictable long-distance travel makes EM-i's petrol flexibility relevant. Choose it because the combined routine works, not because a very low weighted fuel number looks irresistible.
If neither describes you because charging is genuinely inconvenient, add a conventional hybrid to the shortlist. There is no obligation to buy a plug merely because the technology is appealing. The car that fits the ordinary week is the one whose advantages you are most likely to use.
Questions worth asking
Is E5 EM-i simply an E5 Electric with a petrol engine added?
Treat them as separate models. Their South African dimensions, battery capacities, luggage figures and powertrains differ; shared branding does not make their specifications interchangeable.
Can the EM-i continue when external charging is unavailable?
Yes, its petrol-hybrid system permits continued travel. Regular external charging remains important to making use of its plug-in capability.
Which has more electric-only range?
The E5 Electric's published derivative figures are 430 km for Aspire, 410 km for Apex and 450 km for Apex Plus. EM-i's claimed electric-only range is 105 km. Neither is a guaranteed real journey distance.
