Payload vs Towing Capacity: The Weight You Can Use
A bakkie can have an impressive tow rating and still run out of carrying capacity once the family, canopy and trailer are attached.
The load in the bakkie and the load behind it are connected
Payload describes carrying capacity. Towing capacity describes an allowed trailer load under specified conditions. A tow vehicle supports people, accessories and cargo, and it also supports the trailer's downward coupling load. That is where two apparently separate headline numbers begin to interact.

A “one-tonne” allowance can shrink before the cargo arrives
The following numbers are deliberately hypothetical. They are not ratings for a JAC, Foton, Changan or any other vehicle.
Assume GVM is 3,200 kg and the relevant ready-to-load baseline, including the specified fuel allowance but no people or additional equipment, is 2,200 kg. That leaves 1,000 kg before reaching GVM. Now account for the real trip:

The arithmetic leaves 200 kg, not another tonne. Even that is not a loading permission: an axle, tyre or another component's limit may be reached earlier. The position of weight matters, especially with a load carried behind the rear axle.
Where the published baseline already includes a particular driver or fuel allowance, do not deduct the same allowance twice. The exact definition is part of the number. If GVM or the mass basis is unknown, do not derive a production payload from a convenient figure belonging to another model.
Now add the trailer—without counting its nose weight twice
Continue the invented example. The loaded tow vehicle weighs 3,000 kg when hitched, including the supported 200-kg tow-ball load. Assume the trailer's total actual mass is 3,300 kg, including that same 200 kg supported at the coupling. Its axles therefore carry 3,100 kg.
The whole combination weighs 3,000 + 3,100 = 6,100 kg. Equivalently, the vehicle without the coupling load is 2,800 kg, and 2,800 + the trailer's total 3,300 kg also gives 6,100 kg. Adding 3,000 and 3,300 would count the supported 200 kg twice.
Individually plausible, still too heavy together
If this hypothetical combination's GCM is 6,000 kg, it is 100 kg over the combination limit—even though the tow vehicle is below its 3,200-kg GVM. A separate trailer or tow rating does not override GCM.
A generic towing maximum also says nothing by itself about whether the towbar, coupling, trailer brakes and load distribution meet their own requirements. Use the permitted nose-load range and other instructions for the exact equipment, not a universal percentage copied from another combination.

What to take to a weighbridge or qualified towing specialist
Bring the vehicle and trailer in the condition in which they will travel: normal occupants where the weighing process permits, fuel, water, luggage, tools and fitted accessories. Follow the operator's instructions for obtaining actual total and axle readings. A brochure's bare-vehicle mass cannot reveal how your fit-out distributes load.
Have the specialist check vehicle and trailer plates, axle ratings, towbar and coupling limits, tyre ratings and pressures, and the applicable braking and licensing requirements. This guide explains mass arithmetic; it is not an individual legal or engineering certification.
Retain the measurements and repeat the check after a meaningful change, such as adding a canopy, drawer system or different trailer. Leave practical capacity for the extra items that inevitably appear before departure instead of planning exactly against a limit.
The buying lesson is simple: ask how much usable capacity remains after your load and fit-out. That answer can change a shortlist far more than a large maximum-towing number.
Questions worth asking
Can I use maximum payload and maximum towing together?
Only if the actual loaded vehicle and trailer remain within every applicable vehicle, combination, axle, towbar and trailer limit. Do not assume the two maxima can simply be added.
Does tow-ball load use payload?
The downward load supported by the tow vehicle contributes to its loaded mass and axle loads. Account for it when checking the vehicle, without double-counting it in the combined mass.
Can I calculate payload if GVM is unknown?
No reliable remaining-capacity calculation is possible without the applicable limit and the mass definition. Obtain the exact vehicle's ratings rather than filling the gap from a different derivative.
