The BYD ATTO 3 was BYD's first high-volume electric SUV proposition in South Africa and remains a clear entry point into the brand's dedicated-EV range. Standard Range EV costs R699,900 and uses a 49.92 kWh Blade Battery. Extended Range EV costs R783,900 and increases capacity to 60.48 kWh. Both drive the front wheels through a 150 kW motor producing 310 Nm, with an official 0-100 km/h time of 7.3 seconds. Because performance is shared, the R84,000 decision is chiefly about range and battery reserve. The Standard's published range is around 345 km under its stated cycle, while the Extended is associated with a 420 km WLTP claim in South African material. Those figures enable comparison, not guaranteed travel. Speed, temperature, gradients, air-conditioning, passengers and tyre pressure all affect consumption. A buyer whose routine rarely exceeds 150 km per day may find Standard entirely sufficient when home charging is dependable. Extended earns its premium for frequent regional trips, irregular charging access or owners who want more reserve during power or infrastructure disruptions. Buying the larger battery only to keep it permanently full is not automatically better value. The ATTO 3 is a five-seat compact-to-medium crossover. Its upright body and flat electric platform support family packaging, while the rear hatch is easier for bulky items than a sedan boot. A physical check is still essential: install child seats, place the normal stroller or mobility equipment in the luggage area and assess rear-seat comfort behind the intended driver. The front-wheel-drive layout and road tyres indicate an urban and touring role rather than serious trail use. Cabin design is one of the model's distinctive features. A 12.8-inch rotating display, panoramic roof, heated front seats, electric tailgate and broad assistance specification are standard across the local derivatives, alongside the playful interior themes for which the model is known. Some buyers will enjoy the personality; others may prefer simpler controls. Phone pairing, navigation, climate operation and charging menus should all be tried while parked. Software capability only creates value when the owner can use it without distraction. Charging should be planned before finance. An approved home wall unit is normally the most convenient method because the car charges while the household sleeps. Public DC charging supports longer journeys, but a stated peak does not describe the complete curve. Charger availability, battery temperature and starting state of charge affect time. The smaller Standard battery may need more frequent stops on a long route but can also require less energy for a similar percentage refill. Extended provides a wider route buffer. Both need a backup plan rather than assuming a single charger will work. Buyers should read the warranty booklet, especially battery capacity language and service conditions, and obtain insurer confirmation for charging equipment and glass. Tyre prices, finance cost and home electrical work belong in the ownership calculation. The ATTO 3 remains a sensible electric family SUV because it is fast enough, usefully packaged and available in two battery sizes without forcing a performance upgrade. Standard Range is the best-value city and commuter choice. Extended Range is the more relaxed all-purpose choice for drivers who take longer trips or cannot charge every night. BYD South Africa's published warranty table lists five-year or 100,000 km complete-vehicle cover, eight-year or 200,000 km power-battery cover and five-year or 100,000 km drive-unit cover for the ATTO 3.
