BYD SEAL

The BYD SEAL is a four-door battery-electric sedan that arrived in South Africa in 2024. Premium Extended Range RWD costs R1,007,900 and combines an 82.56 kWh Blade Battery with a 230 kW rear motor, 360 Nm, a 570 km WLTP claim and a 5.9-second 0-100 km/h time. Performance AWD 3.8S costs R1,211,900 and uses two motors for 390 kW, 670 Nm, a 520 km WLTP claim and a 3.8-second acceleration time. The two derivatives share the same fundamental battery and sleek sedan architecture, making the trade clear: Premium travels farther in the official test and costs R204,000 less; Performance buys all-wheel-drive traction and remarkable speed. The SEAL uses BYD's e-Platform 3.0 and cell-to-body battery integration, which treats the battery structure as part of the vehicle. For a buyer, the relevant result is a low floor, rigid package and cabin designed around electric propulsion. Technical names should not replace a practical inspection. The sloping roof, seating position, door openings and rear headroom need to suit regular passengers. Luggage is divided between a listed 400-litre rear boot and a 50-litre front compartment. That can work well for a couple or small family, but it is less flexible than a tall hatchback opening for bulky items. Cabin equipment supports the premium positioning. The official South African specification includes a 15.6-inch rotating centre screen, panoramic glass roof, heated and ventilated front seats, 12-speaker Dynaudio sound and an electric tailgate on both derivatives. Driver assistance and camera systems are extensive on paper. Every owner should practise common functions while stationary, set up shortcuts and understand assistance limits before relying on them. A glass roof adds light but can affect heat load; climate use, temperature and direct sun can influence energy consumption. Charging access is the purchase gate. A home wall unit turns the car into a vehicle that starts most days with the required range. Public DC charging enables long trips, but advertised peak power does not equal the average for a complete session. Battery temperature, charger condition, state of charge and the vehicle's charging curve all matter. The 570 km and 520 km WLTP claims are controlled comparisons. Sustained South African motorway speed, hills, headwind, heavy rain, passengers, luggage and air-conditioning will reduce the distance. A safe plan retains a reserve and identifies backup chargers. The SEAL's acceleration deserves proportionate judgement. Premium's 230 kW and 5.9 seconds are already quicker than ordinary traffic requires. Performance's 390 kW and 3.8 seconds can overwhelm judgement long before the electronics lose control. All-wheel drive improves powered traction, not braking distance on unsuitable tyres. Buyers should price insurance and replacement tyres before choosing the flagship. Ride comfort on rough urban tar should also be tested because low-profile performance tyres and a low sedan stance can expose pothole harshness. Owners must follow service and battery-care requirements and read the capacity-retention terms. Premium is the recommended derivative for most buyers because it combines the longest official range, strong performance and the lower price. Performance is coherent for an enthusiast who wants all-wheel-drive acceleration and accepts the range, tyre, insurance and purchase-cost consequences. BYD South Africa's published warranty table lists five-year or 100,000 km complete-vehicle cover, eight-year or 200,000 km power-battery cover and five-year or 100,000 km drive-unit cover for the SEAL. BYD South Africa separately publishes roadside-assistance coverage for five years or 100,000 km, whichever comes first.
