BAIC X55 Plus

A front-wheel-drive turbo-petrol compact SUV whose four grades share one powertrain and separate mainly through comfort, safety and finish.

The current BAIC X55 Plus is the upgraded South African version launched in August 2024, following the original X55's local introduction in 2022. It occupies the compact lifestyle-SUV role in BAIC's three-model range: less overtly rugged and smaller than the B30, and far more road-focused than the body-on-frame B40 Plus. The useful starting point for a buyer is that the four current derivatives do not offer four different engines. Dynamic, Elite, Premium and Premium 2T all use BAIC's 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and front-wheel drive. BAIC's current model table quotes 138 kW, 305 Nm, a 7.8-second 0-100 km/h time and estimated combined consumption of 7.7 litres per 100 km for every grade. That common mechanical base simplifies the decision: paying more does not buy a stronger engine or all-wheel drive, so the extra spend must be justified by equipment and presentation. Dynamic is the price-led entry point. The official brochure still gives it the 10.1-inch central screen, 10.25-inch instrument display, reversing image, smartphone connection, Type-C charging, keyless entry, push-button start, electronic parking brake, auto hold and selectable Eco, Sport, Comfort and Smart modes. Elite adds convenience features, including wireless charging, and changes seat adjustment and cabin detailing. Premium is where BAIC groups much of the richer comfort and assistance equipment: the brochure lists heated and ventilated front seats, more extensive electric seat adjustment, driver-seat memory, a panoramic camera view and driver-assistance functions such as lane-departure warning, blind-spot detection, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and forward-collision warning. Premium 2T uses the Premium equipment basis with a two-tone exterior treatment; it is not a separate engine tune despite the suffix. That distinction protects a buyer from paying for an assumed performance upgrade that BAIC does not claim. The current live table gives the same outputs and consumption to Premium and Premium 2T. The X55 Plus's chassis is similarly consistent across the lineup. BAIC lists MacPherson independent front suspension, multi-link independent rear suspension, ventilated front discs and solid rear discs. Front-wheel drive suits its urban and touring remit, and all grades use the electronic shifter and dual-clutch transmission. There is no current AWD derivative, so gravel-road confidence should not be confused with off-road traction hardware. The design brings more visual drama than many conservative compact SUVs: concealed-style door handles, a strong grille graphic, slim lighting, a black interior and distinctive wheel choices are central to its appeal. Official South African colours include Electric Yellow, Metallic Grey, Scarlet Red, Krypton Grey, Polar White and Turquoise Blue, subject to grade and stock. Those bold finishes make the car easy to personalise, although buyers thinking about resale may prefer a neutral colour. Ownership cover is a significant part of the offer. BAIC South Africa lists a five-year or 150,000 km warranty and a five-year or 60,000 km service plan for the X55 Plus. The distance limits matter: a high-mileage driver may exhaust the service plan well before five years, so the service schedule and later maintenance costs deserve attention. Fuel budgeting should use the current 7.7 l/100 km published estimate and the buyer's own route, not an older cycle value lifted from a superseded brochure. The X55 Plus ultimately makes sense for someone who wants strong standard performance and expressive design but does not need AWD or hybridisation. Because the powertrain is shared, the most rational comparison is Dynamic versus Elite for value, then Premium versus Premium 2T for equipment and appearance.

Where the BAIC X55 Plus Fits Best

A practical view of the buyer and roads this model is best suited to.

Who buys this

The X55 Plus is aimed at style-conscious urban households wanting a brisk turbo-petrol SUV, buyers who value a large standard screen and modern cabin, and shoppers prepared to choose trim by equipment rather than engine output. It is less suitable for anyone whose brief requires diesel economy, hybrid propulsion, seven seats or four-wheel drive.

City
Its shared 138 kW turbo engine gives every grade the same basic response in city traffic, so even Dynamic does not feel like a deliberately weakened entry model. Front-wheel drive, auto hold, an electronic parking brake and the DCT suit daily commuting. The body is compact enough for normal shopping-centre use, though concealed handles and camera equipment should be tried in person. Premium's surround-view and assistance functions provide the clearest urban convenience advantage.
Highway
The published 305 Nm torque figure and seven-speed gearing give the X55 Plus a credible overtaking specification for national roads. Independent rear suspension should help maintain composure with passengers, while the richer Premium seating equipment matters on longer trips. All grades share the same official consumption estimate, so there is no economy reason to choose one trim over another. Buyers should instead compare wheel cost, seat comfort and assistance calibration.
Off-Road
The X55 Plus is a road-biased front-wheel-drive SUV. It can deal with maintained gravel and ordinary holiday access roads when driven to the conditions, but it has no current AWD variant, low range or locking differential. Its camera technology on Premium can help the driver see close obstacles, yet a display cannot create traction or protect road tyres from sharp surfaces. The B30 HEV AWD or B40 Plus is the more appropriate BAIC when poor-road ability is central.

BAIC X55 Plus — Should You Buy It?

4.1/5
BAIC X55 Plus review: style and output without drivetrain confusion

The X55 Plus makes its buying decision unusually clear: all four South African grades use the same 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and front-wheel drive. Moving up the range therefore buys equipment, seating comfort, assistance technology or the Premium 2T appearance treatment, not a stronger engine or all-wheel drive. That consistency makes Dynamic a credible value choice and leaves Premium to justify itself through the features an owner will actually use. The compact footprint, independent rear suspension and 7.7 l/100 km official estimate suit a road-focused urban and touring role. Buyers should test the DCT in crawling traffic, verify smartphone compatibility on the exact car and remember that a camera cannot create off-road traction. The five-year warranty and service plan help, but high-mileage owners should check the distance ceiling carefully.

How this score is calculated · Methodology v1.0

A consistent powertrain makes the X55 Plus easy to shop: select Dynamic or Elite for value, Premium for equipment, and Premium 2T only if the two-tone finish matters.

The X55 Plus combines a strong common engine specification with a meaningful equipment ladder. Dynamic already covers many daily essentials, which places pressure on Elite and Premium to earn their additional cost through features the buyer will actually use. Premium makes the strongest technology case, while Premium 2T is an appearance decision rather than a mechanical upgrade. The absence of AWD, hybrid power or a second engine limits complexity but also narrows the audience. That clarity helps buyers reject unsuitable briefs before signing.

What's Good
  • ✓Same 138 kW and 305 Nm output on every grade
  • ✓Seven-speed DCT standard throughout
  • ✓Large instrument and centre displays
  • ✓Independent rear suspension
  • ✓Premium grade carries a broad assistance package
  • ✓Distinctive exterior colour palette
  • ✓Five-year or 150,000 km warranty
  • ✓Five-year or 60,000 km service plan
  • ✓Clear separation between Premium and two-tone appearance
Watch Out For
  • ✕No AWD derivative
  • ✕No petrol-hybrid option
  • ✕Premium 2T adds no extra engine performance
  • ✕DCT behaviour should be tested in congestion
  • ✕Service-plan distance may be reached early
  • ✕Driver-assistance content varies sharply by trim
  • ✕Bold colours may narrow used-market appeal
  • ✕Current live and older brochure figures must not be mixed
  • ✕Some smartphone functions use mirroring rather than guaranteed native integration

BAIC X55 Plus FAQs
