What you need to know first
Kenyan automatic-car shoppers are often trying to solve a real daily problem: long traffic queues, repeated hill starts, a new driver learning busy roads or a family that wants less clutch work. That is a useful reason to choose an automatic. It is not a reason to compare every automatic using the cheapest manual price in the same model range.
This page treats the transmission as part of the identity of the car. A Toyota Starlet automatic, Suzuki Swift CVT and Ford Ranger automatic do different jobs, use different hardware and sit at different price points. The useful shortlist begins with the exact derivative, then moves to feel, servicing, fuel use and route suitability.

Lowest-priced qualifying automatic variants
This list recognises automatic, CVT, DCT, AMT and other clearly labelled automatic families in the exact Kenya variant record. It keeps the gearbox name and the KES price visible together.

Automatic is a family of machines
CVT, DCT, AMT and automatic do not feel identical
A torque-converter automatic uses a fluid coupling and stepped ratios. A CVT varies the effective ratio continuously. A dual-clutch gearbox uses two clutches to prepare ratios, while an AMT operates a manual-style gearbox with actuators. All remove the clutch pedal, but the response at take-off, low speed and overtaking can be quite different.
The label is a starting point for questions, not a reliability verdict. Ask for the exact transmission name, the service interval, the fluid requirement and the warranty treatment. A well-maintained gearbox with a clear local support path is more useful than a fashionable abbreviation with no written explanation.
Write the exact transmission beside the variant price.
Ask how the gearbox behaves on a slope and in slow traffic.
Check whether the authorised workshop lists specific fluid or inspection requirements.
Test the problem you are paying to solve
Traffic is the real automatic-car test
Take the car through the slowest part of the ordinary route. Notice whether it creeps in a controllable way, whether the brake pedal is easy to modulate and whether the vehicle hesitates when a gap opens. Try a tight parking manoeuvre and a hill start if the dealer route permits it. These are the moments when an automatic either lowers workload or adds uncertainty.
Then drive a faster section. Check the response when joining a road, climbing with passengers and passing slower traffic. A quiet cabin can be pleasant, but predictable throttle response and a clear view of the road matter more to long-term confidence.
Use the exact automatic variant, not a manual demonstration car.
Test reverse, parking, hill holding and low-speed steering.
Take the route and passenger load that make your current commute tiring.
Keep the gearbox healthy
Service support belongs in the purchase decision
Automatic repairs can be expensive when the wrong fluid, delayed service or overheating is involved. That does not mean an automatic is a poor choice; it means the ownership plan must include the exact manufacturer's requirements and a workshop that understands the vehicle. Ask what the service plan covers and what it excludes.
Fuel use also belongs in the comparison. Two automatic variants can use different engines, weights or ratios. Use the exact stored consumption where it exists, then add a sensible allowance for traffic, air conditioning, hills and load. A small monthly fuel difference can matter over years, but it should not be invented from a gearbox label.
Keep the gearbox service evidence with the vehicle documents.
Ask for written warranty exclusions and roadside-support terms.
Compare on-road price and running cost together before choosing the cheapest automatic.

What exact gearbox is fitted to this variant?
Is the displayed KES price for the automatic derivative itself?

Words on this page, made simple
Derivative
The exact version of a model—its engine, gearbox and equipment—not merely the badge on the boot.
ESC
Electronic stability control. It can brake individual wheels to help the car follow the driver's intended path during a skid.
ISOFIX
Built-in metal anchor points used by compatible child seats. The vehicle and child-seat manuals must still agree.
Payload
The combined weight the vehicle may carry, including people, bags and accessories.
Braked towing limit
The heaviest trailer the vehicle may tow when that trailer has its own working brakes.
Tow-ball limit
The most downward weight the trailer may press onto the vehicle's towbar connection.
Gross combination mass
The highest allowed total weight of the loaded vehicle and loaded trailer together.
PHEV
A plug-in hybrid: it has a battery that can be charged from an external plug as well as an engine.
Principal
The money borrowed before interest and finance fees are added.
Balloon payment
A large part of the debt deliberately left for the end of the finance agreement.
Annualise
Turn an irregular cost into a yearly amount, so monthly and occasional bills can be compared fairly.
How the list was built
Method, eligibility and limits
The catalogue identifies automatic families from the exact transmission field and variant record.
Only active Kenya variants with positive numeric KES price rows are ranked.
The displayed order is price order, not a reliability, comfort or driving score.
Manual derivatives are never used as automatic price substitutes.
The first live qualifying card is Hagalu's current database answer. Confirm the exact transmission, stock and dated dealer quote because the cheapest automatic can change when prices are updated.
Is a CVT the same as a normal automatic?
No. Both remove the clutch pedal, but a CVT and a stepped automatic use different mechanisms and can feel different. Read the exact derivative specification and test the car.
Do automatic cars use more fuel?
It depends on the engine, gearbox calibration, vehicle weight, route and driver. Compare the exact derivative's stored consumption and allow for Kenyan traffic rather than applying a universal rule.
What should I ask about automatic-car maintenance?
Ask for the gearbox type, fluid specification, service interval, warranty exclusions, workshop capability and roadside-support terms in writing.

Primary technical references checked 27 September 2026. Illustrations are conceptual, not photographs or specifications of a particular vehicle. Worked examples use explicitly stated assumptions, not current tariffs or quotations.

Prices, equipment and availability can change after publication. Ranked model cards link their recorded vehicle source when one is available; the broader sources above explain market, legal or calculation context. Always verify the exact derivative in a current OEM document and written dealer quotation.
