What you need to know first

Kenya buyers need two prices on the same page: the ex-showroom figure for the exact variant and the selected-city estimate for getting that vehicle ready to use. Combining them too early hides which part came from the vehicle price, which part came from a national process and which part is a planning allowance.

Hagalu's city selector is designed for comparison, not for pretending that every city has a different legal tariff. Registration and licensing are national processes. Delivery and handling can vary with distance and seller arrangements, while insurance belongs to the vehicle and driver risk. The page therefore keeps the roles separate and labels planning values plainly.

Ex-showroom is a clean comparison basis

The ex-showroom figure should identify the model and exact variant, use KES, state VAT treatment and carry an effective date. This is the number to use when comparing a Toyota Starlet with a Suzuki Swift, or a Ford Ranger grade with another Ranger grade. It is not a complete delivery promise and it should not be mixed with a different derivative's city quote.

Where an exact public dealer price is not available, a planning value can still help a buyer understand the market, but it must remain labelled as derived. A planning value is not a distributor claim and should be replaced by a written quotation before a purchase decision.

  • Name the exact variant and effective date.
  • Keep VAT included or excluded status visible.
  • Never place prose such as POA inside a numeric price field.
Separate the city role

City selection should explain delivery, not invent tax differences

A vehicle delivered to Malindi may carry a different transport allowance from one handed over in Nairobi. That is a commercial logistics difference. It should not be described as a different national registration or licensing rate without evidence. Keeping the components separate lets the buyer challenge the right line when a dealer quote arrives.

For a normal new private vehicle, an inspection charge should not be added merely to make the estimate look complete. If a specific use, import status or legal process requires an inspection, the seller should identify it and the buyer should ask for the supporting charge.

  • Use the selected city for the delivery and handling context.
  • Keep national statutory charges at their documented baseline.
  • Treat delivery and insurance percentages as planning estimates unless the quote confirms them.
Ask for the final document

The on-road estimate is a conversation starter

Before payment, request a written quotation that names the exact variant, price date, VAT treatment, delivery location, registration and licensing treatment, insurance basis, accessories, finance fees and warranty or service-plan terms. Compare two quotes only after the assumptions match.

If a quote is higher than the estimate, ask which line changed. If it is lower, ask what was left out. Clear questions protect the buyer better than an apparently precise total that cannot explain itself.

  • Ask the seller to separate official charges from dealer allowances.
  • Confirm whether insurance is a quote, an estimate or excluded.
  • Keep the final document with the vehicle and finance records.

Words on this page, made simple

Derivative
The exact version of a model—its engine, gearbox and equipment—not merely the badge on the boot.
ESC
Electronic stability control. It can brake individual wheels to help the car follow the driver's intended path during a skid.
ISOFIX
Built-in metal anchor points used by compatible child seats. The vehicle and child-seat manuals must still agree.
Payload
The combined weight the vehicle may carry, including people, bags and accessories.
Braked towing limit
The heaviest trailer the vehicle may tow when that trailer has its own working brakes.
Tow-ball limit
The most downward weight the trailer may press onto the vehicle's towbar connection.
Gross combination mass
The highest allowed total weight of the loaded vehicle and loaded trailer together.
PHEV
A plug-in hybrid: it has a battery that can be charged from an external plug as well as an engine.
Principal
The money borrowed before interest and finance fees are added.
Balloon payment
A large part of the debt deliberately left for the end of the finance agreement.
Annualise
Turn an irregular cost into a yearly amount, so monthly and occasional bills can be compared fairly.
How the list was built

Method, eligibility and limits

  1. The ex-showroom price comes from the exact Kenya variant price record.
  2. The city calculation adds the selected city's documented or planning charge rows without changing national statutory rates.
  3. Inspection is zero for the normal new private-vehicle baseline unless an applicable charge is confirmed.
  4. Insurance and dealer delivery remain visibly identified as planning inputs when they are not a final seller quotation.
Straight answers

Questions people actually ask

What is the difference between ex-showroom and on-road price in Kenya?

Ex-showroom is the vehicle-price basis for the exact variant. On-road adds the selected delivery and ownership lines that apply to getting that vehicle ready for use.

Do Nairobi and Mombasa have different registration rates?

Do not assume that they do. National statutory charges should remain national unless an authoritative source says otherwise; city differences in a planning estimate are mainly delivery or handling context.

Is insurance included in the Kenya on-road estimate?

It can be shown as a separate estimate or quote basis. The buyer should replace a planning percentage with a personal insurer quotation before accepting a final total.

Why is a brand-new vehicle's inspection line zero?

The normal new private-vehicle baseline does not invent an inspection charge. If a particular import or use case requires inspection, the seller should identify it separately.

Sources and checking method

Primary technical references checked 27 September 2026. Illustrations are conceptual, not photographs or specifications of a particular vehicle. Worked examples use explicitly stated assumptions, not current tariffs or quotations.

Prices, equipment and availability can change after publication. Ranked model cards link their recorded vehicle source when one is available; the broader sources above explain market, legal or calculation context. Always verify the exact derivative in a current OEM document and written dealer quotation.
