What do WLTP and NEDC mean?

WLTP means Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure. It is the newer laboratory test and uses more varied speeds, acceleration and driving conditions.

NEDC means New European Driving Cycle. It is an older laboratory test that commonly produces a more optimistic electric-range figure.

Both are standardised comparison figures, not guaranteed real-world range. Temperature, speed, traffic, load, terrain and climate-control use can change the distance achieved. Compare vehicles using the same test cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about electric cars, their benefits, fuel efficiency, and value. Browse by body type or compare transmissions.

Are electric cars practical in South Africa?

Practicality depends on your regular routes, access to suitable home or workplace charging, nearby public chargers and the exact vehicle's published range. Map frequent and occasional trips, including a charging backup, before choosing a derivative.

How long does an electric car take to charge?

Charging time depends on usable battery capacity, the car's maximum AC or DC input, charger output, the starting and target charge levels, battery temperature and local electrical supply. Check the exact derivative's official charging conditions rather than applying one time to every EV.

How should I assess electric-car battery life?

Battery ageing varies with chemistry, thermal management, charging habits, use and climate. Check the exact model's battery warranty and exclusions; for a used EV, a battery-health report is more useful than assuming a universal annual degradation rate.
