Buying a car in Tanzania: what to check first
A car advertised for export, a vehicle awaiting clearance in Dar es Salaam and a registered car ready for collection are three different buying propositions. If you are arranging delivery to Arusha, Mwanza or another destination, confirm who handles transport and when responsibility for the vehicle changes hands. Car prices in Tanzania: separate purchase and delivery costs
Request a quote in Tanzanian shillings with the exact vehicle identity and a clear list of inclusions. For an import, separate purchase, freight, insurance, clearance-related charges, registration and onward delivery. For a locally available car, ask which of those steps have already been completed and which documents demonstrate that.
A low overseas asking price is not a ready-to-drive Tanzania price. Record the payment currency and who bears any exchange-rate movement if the exporter uses another currency. The Tanzania Trade Portal directs vehicle importers to TRA's used-motor-vehicle valuation system. Use the official route to identify the applicable valuation process and confirm the information required for your vehicle. A customs valuation and a seller's invoice answer different questions; do not assume a discounted invoice settles the final tax assessment.

TBS has published a notice requiring used vehicles from Japan, the United Kingdom and Dubai to be inspected and issued a Certificate of Roadworthiness before export to Tanzania. Check the latest notice, applicable origin and appointed inspection arrangements for your shipment; do not rely on a seller's generic assurance that inspection can be sorted out later.
